About the Hanky Code:

The hanky code, also known as the handkerchief code, is a symbolic system that emerged in the 1970s within the LGBTQ+ community, primarily among gay men, as a way to communicate and indicate specific sexual interests or fetishes to one another. It was commonly used in settings like gay bars, clubs, and cruising areas where discreet communication was necessary.

The hanky code involved wearing colored handkerchiefs or bandanas in specific pockets or tied around specific body parts to signal different interests or preferences. The color of the hanky and its placement carried meaning, with the left side indicating that the person is primarily a "top" or dominant, and the right side indicating that the person is primarily a "bottom" or submissive. The hanky's placement on different body parts represented various fetishes or interests.
